The exterior surfaces are covered in intricate geometric veneers, including the asanoha or hemp leaf pattern, checkered motifs, and various interlocking diamond designs. These patterns are created using naturally contrasting light, medium, and dark wood species arranged in diagonal bands across the lid and sides. Based on visual characteristics and market consensus, this item is a Japanese puzzle box, also known as a Himitsu Bako, which typically functions through a specific sequence of sliding panels to reveal an interior compartment.
