Lot 91:
Description
This lot features two Chinese decorative carvings likely dating to the 20th century. The first item is a figural carving of a scholar or dignitary executed in variegated soapstone with a palette of cream, tan, and light brown featuring natural russet inclusions. The figure is depicted in traditional flowing robes and an official hat, accompanied by a smaller attendant figure carved into the side. The piece features incised garment details and is mounted on a separate black finished tiered rectangular base. The second item is an animal group carving depicting a large reclining water buffalo with two smaller buffalo at its side. The group is positioned on a base of stylized Chinese cash coins featuring relief-carved characters including the character bao for treasure. The material is a dark, matte-finished substance, possibly stained soapstone or a resin composite. The carving rests on a separate four-footed wooden stand with a dark reddish-brown finish and scrolled feet.
Condition report:
Both items are in good overall condition. The soapstone figure shows minor surface scuffing and natural fissures inherent to the stone. The water buffalo group exhibits light surface wear and accumulated dust in the recessed areas of the carving.
